1. Start with a Clean Canvas
Before applying any makeup, it’s important to start with a clean and moisturized face. This will create a smooth base for your makeup and will also help it last longer. Make sure to use a gentle cleanser and a lightweight moisturizer that’s suitable for your skin type. It’s essential to follow a comprehensive Skincare Routine to prep your skin for your makeup application to ensure that your makeup sits nicely on the skin.
Additionally, remember the importance of sunscreen! Applying sunscreen can protect your skin from harmful UV rays that can cause damage and premature aging. Opt for a lightweight, non-greasy formula that is suitable for your skin type. I like to use my Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen, since its mattifying and light formula doesn’t break me out. By taking care of your skin, you’ll create a radiant base that will only enhance the beauty of your makeup.
2. Use a Lip Scrub
One of the best ways to achieve smooth lips is by using a lip scrub. Gently exfoliating your lips can help remove dead skin cells and reveal smoother lips. I will often use my Murad facial exfoliator as a lip scrub while I am exfoliating the rest of my face. Additionally, a lip scrub that I often use is the e.l.f. Cosmetics Lip Exfoliator.
3. Invest in Good Tools
Having the right tools can make a huge difference in the application and finish of your makeup. High-quality brushes and sponges can help you achieve a more even and natural-looking finish. These makeup tips will guide you in choosing the best tools for your routine.
Get Your Beauty Arsenal in Check: Must-Have Makeup Tools You Can’t Do Without!
- Makeup Brushes: Consider investing in a set of high-quality brushes, including a foundation brush, blush brush, eyeshadow brush, fan brush, and powder brush.
- Beauty Blender Sponge: A beauty blender sponge is a great tool for blending and applying foundation and concealer. It creates a sheerer look than a brush would.
- Eyelash Curler: An eyelash curler can help make your lashes look longer and more defined.
- Brow Brush and Spoolie: A brow brush, pomade, or pencil and spoolie can help you to achieve perfectly shaped and groomed eyebrows.
- Blotting Papers: Blotting papers can help absorb excess oil and keep your skin looking matte throughout the day.
- Tweezers: Tweezers are essential for keeping your eyebrows in shape and removing any stray hairs. Read more about it below in item 7; Don’t forget about eyebrows.
4. Find your Perfect Foundation/Concealer Match
Choosing the right foundation or concealer shade and texture is crucial for a flawless look. You want to find a shade that matches your skin tone as closely as possible and a texture that suits your skin type (e.g. matte for oily skin, dewy for dry skin). When shopping for foundation, make sure to test the shade on your jawline in natural light to ensure a near-perfect match. Your concealer should be a shade lighter than your natural skin tone if you would like to achieve a slightly brightening effect under the eyes and on the high points of the face.
5. Blend, Blend, Blend
Blending is key to achieving a natural-looking finish with your makeup. Whether you’re applying foundation, concealer, or eyeshadow, make sure to blend thoroughly for a seamless finish using a blending brush or sponge for a smooth and even application. To help achieve the perfect blending, consider trying out some of the following options:
- Use the Right Tools: To achieve a seamless finish, it’s important to use the right tools for blending. A blending brush or sponge is the best option for achieving a smooth and even application. The majority of my makeup brushes are from e.l.f. Cosmetics and EcoTools.
- Start with Small Amounts: It’s easier to build up the coverage of a product gradually than to try and blend out a large amount of product. So, start with small amounts of foundation, concealer or eyeshadow and build up the coverage as needed.
- Blend the Edges: When applying eyeshadow or concealer, make sure to blend the edges thoroughly. This will help to avoid any harsh lines.
- Don’t Forget the Neck: It’s important to blend your foundation and bronzer down to your neck to avoid any visible lines of demarcation. This will ensure that your makeup looks natural and seamless.
6. Embrace the Power of Mascara
Mascara can make a huge difference in how awake and alert you look. It’s important to choose a mascara that suits your needs (e.g. volumizing, lengthening, waterproof) and apply it correctly. Make sure to wiggle the wand from the base of your lashes to the tips for maximum impact. 7. Don’t Forget About Eyebrows
Well-groomed eyebrows can make a big difference in framing your face and adding definition to your features. If you have sparse or uneven brows, using an eyebrow pencil, powder, or pomade can help fill them in and create a more natural-looking shape. Choose a shade that matches your hair color the closest and apply the product with light, feathery strokes to mimic the look of real hair. Afterward, you can also use a clear brow gel to set your brows in place.
In addition to filling in your brows, tweezing can help define your brow shape and create a cleaner, more polished look. However, it’s important not to over-tweeze, as this can lead to sparse or uneven brows. For best results, use high-quality tweezers that are sharp and precise – my favorites are those from Tweezerman. I have to say that no other tweezer thus far has measured up to the precision of Tweezerman tweezers. If you want to learn more about how to achieve the perfect brow shape and maintain your eyebrows, make sure to check out my previous blog post, Find Your Perfect Pair: A Comprehensive Guide to Tweezerman Tweezers. With the right tools and techniques, you can achieve the perfect brows to complement your flawless makeup look.
8. Highlight your Best Features
Highlighter can add a beautiful glow to your face and accentuate your best features. Here are some makeup tips: apply highlighter to the high points of your face, such as your cheekbones, cupid’s bow, and inner corners of your eyes, for a radiant finish. Choose a shade that complements your skin tone and use it sparingly for a natural look. I tend to not wear any blush, as my complexion is naturally quite red. To achieve a subtle finish, consider trying out some of the following options:
Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer
9. Set your Makeup
When it comes to achieving a long-lasting makeup look, particularly for those of us with oily skin, using a high-quality setting spray and/or powder is essential. Acting as a protective layer, these products serve as one of the final steps in your routine to ensure that your base stays in place all day long. By using a good quality setting spray or powder, you can keep your makeup looking flawless without worrying about smudging or melting.
As a side-note: Powder will often accentuate texture and dry spots on the skin, so although powders are generally more effective for those with oily skin, ditching the powder and using a moisturizing setting spray may work best for those with dry skin. One of my favorite products on the market at the moment is the Fenty Beauty Translucent Blotting Powder. So next time you want to ensure your makeup lasts all day (or night), be sure to use a reliable setting spray and/or powder.
With these nine makeup tips, you’ll be well on your way to a flawless look that will have everyone asking for your beauty secrets. Don’t be afraid to try new products and techniques until you find what works best for you.
